Simple Home Remedies for Cold Sores in Mouth

Cold sores are itching, fluid filled blisters which appear on lips, roof of mouth, gums and even on nose which are very irritating, besides being painful. They are caused by the virus herpes simplex which is contagious and can lay dormant until it is triggered by a cold, fever, stress or exposure to sun. Often, cold sores are confused with canker sores, which are bacterial infection causing ulcers in mouth. Canker sores are non- contagious and heal within 3-4 days.

Cold sores and the scabs they leave behind are not just painful, but they are very hideous and annoying at the same time. Fortunately they can be treated with safe and cheap home remedies without any side effects which are tested and effective in healing the sores.

Keep the sore clean and covered

Never try to hide the unsightly cold sores under lipstick, since any makeup will only further aggravate the infection due to the chemicals contained in it. Keep the affected area moist with petroleum jelly which can speed up the healing process, in addition it will prevent bacteria from infecting the open sores. Avoid sharing lipstick or kiss with a person who is having cold sore.

Cold treatment

You can use ice over the sores as soon as they appear to prevent further flare up, thus reducing the time one has to suffer them. Ice packs, popsicles and smoothies also provide temporary relief from the irritation and pain caused to cold sores.

Honey for cold sores

Organic, processed honey is a good remedy for cold sores. As it is a healthy food, it can be applied to the lips and inside the mouth to keep it moisturized as often as needed. The anti-fungal, anti-septic and anti-inflammatory properties of honey will kill the herpes virus thus providing quick relief from it.

Peppermint oil

The volatile essential oil of peppermint is highly permeable, which penetrates the skin to directly attack the herpes simplex virus. This is a preferred treatment by many as it is also effective against acyclovir-resistant strain of this type of virus. Care should be taken not to overuse peppermint oil as it not safe to ingest it.

Healthy diet

A weak immune system welcomes diseases and infections, including cold sores. A healthy diet, rich in anti-oxidants which can boost our immune system can effectively fight of cold sores. Consuming fruits rich in vitamin C and yogurt can help a lot. It is wise to cut down intake of caffeine, tea and carbonated drinks to prevent cold sores.

Tea bags

Used tea bags soothe the cold sores to a great extent. Tea leaves contain tannic acid which can destroy the virus; moreover it will prevent further infection. Pressing either warm or cold tea bags on the cold sores will make them disappear within a few days.

Common salt

This is not a pleasant cure for cold sores, but it can effectively heal it within 2-3 days. Wet the index finger and dip it in powdered common salt. Rub it over the affected area for curing the infection.

Chewing licorice whip

Chewing licorice whip is another effectual remedy for cold sores. The glycyrrhizic acid present in the licorice kills the virus thus reducing the inflammation and pain instantly. Sprinkling the affected area with licorice powder works fine too. Take care not to consume a lot of licorice which can have harmful effects on the human body.
