Do Honey and Cinnamon Really Work for Weight Loss

‘The Scientific World Journal’ published (2008) a study on a group of obese people to compare the effects of honey and sugar. The group taking honey lost 1.3 percent of their body weight and 1.1 % of body fat. The researchers deemed it as inconclusive to come to a final verdict.

Another 2009 ‘International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition’ study, performed with 48 diabetic patients, showed a decrease in cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the study group who took honey instead of sugar for eight weeks. Reduction in body weight was also noticed.

‘The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition’ (2007) published a study that showed slower gastric emptying and reduced postprandial glucose response without affecting satiety ( i.e. making the subjects feel fuller for longer) in the study group administered with 6g of cinnamon. As a result, it may prove beneficial for obesity and weight loss.

How does it Work

A mixture of Honey and Cinnamon not only regulates the blood sugar level but increases metabolism, bolstering the fat burning process. Cinnamon improves insulin function, reduces bad cholesterol level (LDL) and increases good cholesterol level (HDL), which in turn helps in losing weight. It is rich in antioxidants which foster detoxification and aids in weight loss.

Honey has a higher Glycemic Index than sugar, and is, therefore, absorbed in the body much slowly. Moreover, honey releases antioxidants like nutraceuticals which are deft at removing free radicals from the body purifying the system of any toxins that may hinder weight loss.

How to Use Cinnamon and Honey to Lose Weight

Cinnamon tea with honey

  • Break a few cinnamon sticks and put the pieces in a saucepan. You can also use 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon.
  • Now, pour 1 cup water and let it boil for around 7-8 minutes.
  • Take it off the stove and let it sit for a couple of minutes.
  • Strain and pour it into a cup. Add a teaspoon of honey.

It can be consumed either on an empty stomach in the morning, or in between meals or pre-workout or before going to bed at night.

Safety and Precautions

Do not use Cassia cinnamon, sold in the markets simply as cinnamon, because it contains high amounts of coumarin and if consumed regularly, can damage liver and kidney. Always use Ceylon cinnamon, instead, which contains a negligible amount of coumarin.

Side Effects

Cinnamon and honey have no side effects if taken in a controlled way. However, Cinnamon is a warming spice and can raise blood pressure. It may lead to ulceration if not taken in controlled amounts.

Honey, due to its high calorific content must be taken very carefully by diabetic patients.

It is, hence, advised to consult your doctor before you start taking cinnamon and honey regularly for weight loss.
